This month’s selection is far and away the best we’ve had to date. White-hot girl band, Rocket, heavy hitters like Lyrics Born and The Matches, and awesome new jazz-hop, nu-new wave, stoner rock and children’s rasta-metal adult contemporary bands are all represented here today. |
I know, it sounds like some kind of April Fool’s prank, too good to be true. But I can assure you, everything I’ve said is 100% true. Except for that last part.
Artist: Rocket
Song: Future Ex-Boyfriend
ROCKET is the hottest all-girl band in Los Angeles, and perhaps even the world at large. Mixing soda-shop pop with elements of gutter punk and glam, Rocket gets audiences jumping like no one else on the scene. And the lead singer, Lauren Rocket, plays a keytar! How F’ing cool is that?
Artist: Lyrics Born
Song: I Like it I Love It
LYRICS BORN is one of the most exciting MCs in the game, and has been for a long time. I don’t even know who you could possibly compare him to, he’s like the only guy really doing solid funk-soul hip hop of this caliber. “I Like it I Love it” is perhaps his hottest track since 2000’s “I Changed My Mind”.
I Like it I Love It
Artist: The Matches
Song: Wake the Sun
THE MATCHES are four weird dudes that do a sort of new wave punk alternative emo rock type thing that’s sort of hard to describe. It’s not hard to recommend them, however, as the unique quality of their disparate sound is refreshing.
Wake the Sun
Artist: The Gutter Twins
Song: Idle Hands
THE GUTTER TWINS are two individual front men working together in a way that equally talented and charismatic lead singer/guitarists are not typically apt to do. Gutter Twins is the natural evolution of what grunge/industrial/punk/stoner rock would eventually have become if everybody in that scene hadn’t died or transformed into a muppet like Dave Grohl.
Artist: Moka Only
Song: Run and Find (Remix)
MOKA ONLY is Canadian, but hopefully you can look past that obvious blow to his hip hop cred, such that he was the founder of popular and prolific undergound group, “Swollen Members”. Moka Only’s new album, “Vermillion”, is like his one-millionth consecutive release.
Run and Find (Remix)
Artist: Cy Young
Song: Down to Do It (Clap)
CY YOUNG is really tall. Like almost seven feet tall. A former basketball player, he is incongruously named after a famous baseball player. His new album, “Exactly”, is out now on Rawkus Records.
Down to Do It (Clap)
Artist: Copeland
Song: Thanks to You
COPELAND are like those quiet, dorky, wallflowers that you come to find out are secretly better musicians than just about anybody that you know. “Thanks to You” is a beautifully arranged, mellow song that is indicative of the bands signature style.
Thanks to You
Artist: Chuck Taylor
Song: Hot to You and Who
CHUCK TAYLOR (or Chuck T, as he is known to his friends) has been playing with everyone on the west coast for at least 100 years. “Hot to You and Who” combines jazzy loops with bay area Hyphy style to produce an original track that’ll make you wanna ghost ride your whip to it.
Hot to You and Who
Artist: American Princes
Song: Real Love
AMERICAN PRINCES are an exceptional band doing sort of new wave 80s style rock thing. “Real Love” kinda reminds me of a Killers song, only being performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Awesome
